As mentioned earlier on, we sometimes tend to relax after getting our dream job, we only read when preparing for examinations or job interviews. If you want to become an authority in your chosen career path, you must read. New ideas are springing up every day. Create time to research about new discoveries in your area of interest. In this era of the Internet, you do not have to go the Library before you have access to books. You can do so on your mobile phones. So make utmost use of the technology at your disposal to better yourself.  Subscribe to newsletters and also read them when you get it.

Attend Training and Seminar

Attending training, seminar, and workshop will help you keep abreast with latest information in your career. When it comes to attending training, some people will only attend if their organization is paying for it. They don't want to bear the financial burden. I will advise that if you have the means to attend training, you should not delay in doing so because it is the knowledge gained that will make you relevant and keep you on the job.

 Belong to a Professional Body

Identify a professional body that is empowered and authorized to regulate the affairs of your area of specialization and become active member. Where necessary, take professional examinations to give you the necessary qualification to get to the top of your career.

Get a Mentor

Nobody is an island. We all need someone to guide us at some stage in life. Get someone in your field who you admire his/her achievements in your chosen career, someone whom you desire to be like or even better than that will serve as your guide, tutor and adviser in matters relating to your career development. Technology has made connecting with mentors easy. Follow them on twitter, connect with them on LinkedIn. If possible, request to connect on a one-on-one basis. A lot of successful people are willing to mentor others to succeed. Whatever platform they make available for mentoring, take advantage of it. Ask them questions and follow their advice.

Remember, Career success is a Journey, the effort you put in determines how far you go.
