Now that you have finally landed a job and are looking
forward to resuming duty, here are a few tips to help you settle in quickly and
easily at work during your early days. Remember, first impression really do
matter, so make the best first impression you can.
DRESS CODE
It is important that you know the dress culture of your new
employer. Depending on the industry in which your new employers operate in,
certain industries have peculiar dress codes. One way to know the dress code of
the company is through observation during your job interview and possibly
during the orientation programme for new employees. You can also ask your employer what the dress
code is before your first day at work so that you are adequately prepared. Make sure you stick to the dress code as much
as possible.
RESUME ON TIME, DON'T BE THE FIRST TO LEAVE AT CLOSING TIME
Nothing can put you under undue anxiety and pressure on the first day at work than coming late. Ensure that you leave your house early enough to allow you get to the office at least 30 minutes earlier so you can settle down and plan your day. When it is time to close for the day, never be the first to pack up your bag to leave, even if you are not doing anything important. Little things like this create a lasting impression in the minds of your employer. Don’t assume nobody is watching.

MEET YOUR NEW COLLEAGUES/KNOW THEIR NAMES
Some companies will have someone (maybe a supervisor)
introduce you to other staff members of the company. You are not expected to
know the names of all your co-workers within your first week at work, but try
and note the names of those within your immediate team. Where you do not remember the name of a
person, kindly apologize and request that they remind you. As time goes by, you
will get to know and remember the names of the others.
ASK FOR ASSISTANCE WHEN NECESSARY
Ensure you ask questions
and request for assistance when necessary. You are the new entrant and need to
know how things are done in your new company. Do not assume anything; seek
clarification when you are not sure of what to do.
OBSERVE YOUR TEAM MEMBERS AND STAY CLEAR OF TROUBLE
Make it a duty to study your environment. Observe your team
members, identify mischief makers and gossips and avoid meddling with them as
much as possible. You don’t want to have your reputation smeared. Even if you
are a gossip yourself (some persons are), you will do yourself a world of good
to stay clean.
KEEP YOUR PERSONAL BUSINESS TO YOURSELF
As much as possible, keep your personal issues to
yourself. Even though we sometimes need
someone to talk to, don’t be quick to let out your personal issues to someone
who has not earned your trust and respect.
BRING ON YOUR A-GAME
You must show competence when assigned a task. Take
initiative, have a CAN-DO spirit, don't give excuses when assigned a task. You
need to prove that your employer made the right choice employing you for the
job. Be a team player, recognize and appreciate those who help you in the
course of delivering on any task.
Remember that every person you meet at your new workplace
was once a new employee like you. So be calm and don't be anxious. Take one day
at a time and enjoy the ride.
