One of the very few places where relationships are born is the office. The office is a connecting point for people of various personalities and interests.
Before you consider dating your co-worker in the office, here are a few questions you must answer honestly.
1) Office Gossip: Love birds have no hiding place. Your co-workers will notice and tongues will start wagging. Can you handle the side talk that will result from dating your boss or colleague? If your answer is NO, then do not proceed with dating your co-worker.
2) Can you handle criticisms objectively? There will be times when you or your partner will be criticized on your job. If you are criticized by your boss for a job you handled and your partner happens to be in attendance, can you stand it without taking it personal?
3) Can you handle quarrels? Of course there will be days when you and your partner will have your small fights and you are not prepared to see each other. Once you are in a relationship with a co-worker, you are likely to more spend of your spare time with your partner than anyone else in the company. Of course those in the know of your relationship will notice and begin to ask questions when they notice you are avoiding each other. If you are not prepared to answer such questions, then you should not consider dating a co-worker. You don't want people prying in your personal affairs, right?
4) If you are a male, can you handle your partner being promoted ahead of you especially if you are both in the same department or level? Now she is a step ahead of you and promotions bring with it some perks. Will you be able to handle your partner's new status without feeling intimidated?
5) Interacting with other co-worker: Sometimes we all want some space and breathe of fresh air. Can you handle the jealousy when your partner suddenly begins to get close with another co-worker of the opposite sex?
6) Can you handle the distraction? Office romance comes with its own distractions to your work. This is the main reason why companies frown at office romance. Your performance will be affected and your bosses will begin to notice and this may affect your performance evaluation. Remember, you joined the company to grow in your career and if there is anything that can jeopardizes your chances of growing in your career in that company, it will be office romance.
